Porn – are you or your man addicted?

Shocked Woman

Researchers found men check out topless women and erotic scenes in magazines, DVD’s or online for at least 40 minutes a week – or 35 hours a year. They also view porn three times a week, own £26 worth of material – and a quarter have been caught gazing at images by a colleague or their other half.

One in six men went as far to say they were ‘addicted to looking at porn’ while four out of ten said they ‘wouldn’t be prepared to give it up’.

It also emerged that women only spent 19 minutes a week looking at porn.

Porn is a big part of peoples’ lives and in some cases can have a negative impact. The recent survey showed that half of male porn users found that in the long term it makes them unhappy and six in ten porn users were looking to give it all up.

Some porn users end up spending more time with their websites or DVD’s more than with their partners. One in ten men admitted that looking at porn has affected their concentration and the same number said it has impacted their sex life. This can create a huge strain on relationships and porn is increasingly cited as a cause in divorce cases.

Porn is often done in secret, with real consequences when the user is caught as partners feel betrayed and let down. And alarmingly, more than a third of men (37 per cent) said they found movies more stimulating than their other half, while just 16 per cent of women said the same thing.

It’s hard to speak about porn addiction because it’s seen as more shameful than drug or alcohol addictions, which are more widely recognised.  But the sad truth is that sexual frustration or curiosity can quickly lead some people towards a feeling of helplessness and isolation rather than feeling sexy and fulfilled.

With one in six people in the UK admitting their addiction, there are hundreds of thousands of people who could benefit from therapy.  For this group, porn becomes a dead end of loneliness and isolation, rather than being sexy, fun and exciting.

The study was undertaken by Help Porn Addiction – www.helpaddictions.org/porn quizzed 1,000 men and 1,000 women on their porn watching habits and attitudes. Visit their website for more information.
