Copy Cat Neighbours

The secret inspiration behind millions of living rooms has been revealed – our neighbours.

From sofa colours to wallpapers, colour schemes to throws, one in three women admit their living rooms are filled with style they have swiped from their friends and 25% of us have admitted to copycat purchases that were directly inspired by furnishings and ornaments that we’ve first spotted at a neighbour’s house.

Colour schemes are the most popular thing for women to steal from their neighbours and many of us admit to inviting ourselves over to our neighbours house for the sole purpose of checking out their décor!

Women are more likely to look for inspiration from neighbours and friends that have houses with a similar layout and design and research has revealed that women are just as likely to copy their friends when it comes to landscaping the garden.

Jenny Spiers, Manager of Marketing from Homesense who commissioned the research, said: “Keeping up with the Jones’ is nothing new. Stealing design ideas has been around since time began. People tend to copy interiors they have seen in the flesh, rather than on TV shows and magazines. Those looks are attainable and more cost effective to copy.”

I’m lucky, I have a number of stylish friends who I steal ideas and inspiration from, and they don’t seem to mind.  Where do you nick your home styling ideas from?
