All that glitters…

I love jewellery

Jewellery is a big passion of mine (along with wine and cheese!), it’s often one of the first things I notice when I meet people and it’s not unheard of for me to approach unknown people with particularly inspiring pieces to ask about them.  For me, jewellery is an integral part of any outfit. It is the finishing touch, the icing on the cake, the crucial element that ties an outfit all together and moves it from being nicely assembled to being chic-tastic.

Okay, so you might think that this is a little extreme but next time you spot a well dressed woman – someone who has caught your eye because they’ve got their look just right (we all spot them, sometimes more frequently than we’d like) try imagining the same women, in the same outfit minus whatever jewellery she has on. I bet you’ll find yourself thinking that actually if it wasn’t for the statement necklace, or perfectly matched beads or oversized bangles, the outfit would be good but fundamentally lacking something.

Jewellery is a simple way of enhancing clothes – it can update something old, dress up something casual and add interest to something plain.  And the good news is that it can be cheap to acquire and simple to wear. There are no rules as such so in theory anything goes but there are a couple of hints and tips that you might want to consider;

 Think about your neckline – if you’re wearing a necklace, choose one which compliments the shape and cut of your top and is the appropriate length. Long necklaces are great over simple necklines. Shorter necklaces look good worn with lower cut tops, so that there is a bit of a space between the two.
 Apply boob -v- leg logic – I was told that as a woman in her 30s I can choose to show either my legs or my cleavage but not both at the same time. The same can be said for statement jewellery; if you’re wearing a significant necklace the Pat Butcher earrings are probably not necessary!
 Swap and change regularly – use costume jewellery as a wardrobe staple and change it on a daily basis. Buy colourful items that match certain wardrobe pieces and hang them on the same hanger, so they get worn as a pair.
 Use jewellery as make up – buy a short necklace in a colour that works well with your skin tone or that matches your eye colour. It will brighten up your complexion and you’ll get people telling you how well you look.
 Be creative with colour – use colour to complete an outfit but rather than buying sets that match, pick necklaces and bracelets that are different in style but are the same shades of colour. They’ll look great together and work well separately.

There are a plethora of places that sell affordable costume jewellery so it’s very easy to find. Check out Freedom at Topshop for fashionable pieces, Wallis and Dorothy Perkins for colourful everyday items and Accessorize for a bit of glitz.

Bring on the bling!
